The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel\u00a0is a British\u00a0breed\u00a0of\u00a0toy dog\u00a0of\u00a0spaniel type. Four colors are recognized: Blenheim (chestnut and white), tricolour\u00a0(black\/white\/tan), black and tan, and ruby; the coat is smooth and silky.[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The lifespan is usually between eight and twelve years.[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n Historically the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was a\u00a0lap dog\u00a0and is small for a\u00a0spaniel, with fully grown adults comparable in size to adolescents of other larger spaniel breeds. The tail is usually not\u00a0docked,[13]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and the Cavalier should have a silky coat of moderate length. Standards state that it should be free from curl, although a slight wave is allowed. Feathering can grow on their ears, feet, legs and tail in adulthood. Standards require this be kept long, with the feathering on the feet a particularly important aspect of the breed’s features.[13]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n A\u00a0bichon\u00a0is a distinct\u00a0type\u00a0of\u00a0toy dog; it is typically kept as a\u00a0companion dog. Believed to be descended from the\u00a0Barbet, it is believed the bichon-type dates to at least the 11th century; it was relatively common in 14th-century France, where they were kept as pets of the royalty and aristocracy.[1]<\/a><\/sup>[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0From France, these dogs spread throughout the courts of Europe, with dogs of very similar form being seen in a number of portraits of the upper classes of Germany, Portugal and Spain; from Europe, the type also spread to colonies in Africa and South America.[2]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The name “bichon” is believed to be a contraction of “barbichon”, which means “little barbet”.[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n The Bichon Fris\u00e9 is a small dog that weighs approximately 6\u201311 kilograms (10\u201320 pounds) and stands 23\u201330 centimetres (9\u201312 inches) at the\u00a0withers<\/a>, but slightly larger dogs are not uncommon. The skull is slightly rounded and the muzzle is not pointy. The tail is groomed to be long and curly and is carried over the back. It has a black nose and dark round eyes; its white hair consists of a curly, dense coat with little shedding (much like a poodle in this respect), although many of the breeds do tend to have less curly hair than others.\u00a0<\/sup><\/p>\n The\u00a0American Kennel Club<\/a>\u00a0refers to the Bichon Fris\u00e9 as “merry” and “curious”,[13]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and the breed standard calls for a dog that is “gentle mannered, sensitive, playful and affectionate.” The dogs are generally very sociable and do well with an owner who takes them along on outings, and are affectionate and intelligent.
